mmmm 2012 ... The War of 1812 Bicentenary Season
In our fourth season, we marked the 200th Anniversary of the beginning of the War of 1812. Many of the new works featured this year were a direct response to this important but dark period in the history of North America, which was a step on the road to Canada becoming a country, with its own distinct culture, governance and mindset.

The 1812-themed works ranged from tone paintings of elements of the conflict, to remembrance of specific events of the 1812 war to reflections on various facets of warfare itself.

The first concert of our 2012 season, like the War of 1812, is now history. Many thanks to our attentive and enthusiastic audience!

Martha Hill Duncan appeared as a guest composer, and performed the piano part in a performance of a new version of her evocative piece The War Memorial, with guest artist Lynne Hopcraft singing the vocal part. The text was written by Janet Windeler Ryan, who joined us at the show. Thanks for agreeing to work with us, Martha ... we're all happy with the dimension this piece added to the show!

mmmm regulars Michel Allard, Marco Burak and Michael Dobinson premiered new works at the show, reflecting various responses to, and remembrances of, the War of 1812. A contrasting note of commemoration was added by the reprise performance of regular Michelle Wells' In Paradisum.

Marco's Sonata for 2 Recorders and Piano featured the first mmmm appearance of guest artist Doug Peterman, who performed one of the two recorder parts in this fine new work. This work used the tunes "The British Grenadiers" and "Yankee Doodle" as source material to create three movements referring to the environs and participants in the campaigns in Ontario from 1812 to 1814.

Michel referred to his own heritage in commemorating the participation and sacrifice of the indigenous North American peoples in the War of 1812 in Solitude and Transformation. This piece was a bit of a family affair for Michel, as his brother Paul Allard again returned as a guest performer; the percussion part was performed by Michel on a drum built by his daughter. Michel also premiered the piano version of Onguiaarha, originally written for carillon, and his new piano work Mania, in which he explored new compositional territory.

Michelle and Michael both presented works incorporating electronics, but which reflect very different philosophies to electronic music. Michael continued his work with electracoustmatic music, where live electronics are performed and combined with acoustic instruments, in the premieres of The Inundation of Crysler's Farm (piano, organ and electronics) and Brock's Monuments (flute, voice, piano, organ and electronics). Both of Michael's pieces refer to locations that serve as memorials to the 1812 conflict. Michelle's In Paradisum is a piece fully realized in the studio in the tradition of music concret, and was played from a remaster of the original 1/4" magnetic tape master.
